Midway between Stamford, Oundle, Corby and Peterborough;
on the edge of Willow Brook, is the village of Kings
Cliffe.
Predominantly built of local stone and
collyweston roofing, Kings Cliffe is generally regarded
as one of the prettiest villages in East
Northamptonshire.
A thousand years ago, it was a royal stronghold in the
heart of Rockingham Forest and the centre of an estate
which later formed the basis of Cliffe Bailiwick in
Rockingham Forest. A 'swanimote' or forest court with
legal and administrative functions was held here until
about 1690. Charters for a market and fair were granted
in 1249.
Today this picturesque village is home to some 1,200
people and the largest village in the area. The
traditional industries of wood turning (treen) and cart
building have long since passed into the mists of time
but Kings Cliffe still plays host to a number of
enterprises.
Social life in the village is buoyant (some might even
say hectic) with a great community spirit.
